Although vent-free gas heaters capitalize on the clean-burning properties of natural gas or propane to provide room heat, controversy surrounds the issue of how clean they actually are. Several states limit their use, and California prohibits them for residential heating altogether, although you can use one to heat an outbuilding or a shed. Controversial or not, vent-free room heaters are simple to install, requiring nothing more than a safe location and a source of gas.

Avenger Dual Fuel Vent Free Heater How To Hook Up

Description

Whereas a conventional gas heater draws air from the room or from outside to burn its fuel and exhausts the combustion gases outside, a vent-free heater recycles room air. The refined design of the heater reduces the production of combustion gases to a minimum, and proponents of vent-free heating claim 99-percent efficiency. Compared to conventional heaters, vent-free heaters have a compact design, and because they don't require vents, they can fit into small spaces. All they require for operation is a continuous flow of gas, usually supplied via a hose from a remote tank.

Sizing Your Heater

VentAvenger Dual Fuel Vent Free Heater How To Hook Up

To determine if the heater you plan to install is the right size, you need to form a ratio of the room's volume to the amount of heat produced by all appliances in it, including the proposed heater. If the ratio exceeds that determined by the National Fuel Gas Code to constitute a 'confined' space, you must either use a smaller heater or find a way to admit extra air into the room. Failure to do either could contaminate the room with unacceptable levels of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. You should include rooms that adjoin the room you are heating in your calculation, if they don't have doors.

Installing the Heater

Once you've determined that your heater is safe for the space in which you're installing it, the actual installation procedure isn't difficult. If the heater has legs, you can simply place it in a corner of the room or against a wall. A heater without legs just hangs on screws set into wall anchors, like a picture. You may have to make a hole in the wall for the gas hose as it's illegal to keep gas containers indoors. The heater has a standard screw-on connection, but you may have to purchase a special fitting to make the connection.

Warning

One of the main products of the combustion process of a vent-free heater is water vapor. A 40,000 BTU heater puts out one gallon of water every 2 1/2 hours, which can raise the humidity in the room to uncomfortable levels and create moisture-related problems. Moreover, the heater also lowers air quality by putting out nitrogen dioxide, which combines with the water to form nitric acid. Moreover, if the heater isn't cleaned regularly, it can emit black carbon deposits that end up coating everything in the room. A dirty heater can also create an unpleasant odor.
